Who needs a survival kit? You have a phone. Classic tools of exploration, all there under your uncalloused thumb. But your phone is not a rain poncho or a power bar. It’s time to think like a modern explorer, one as capable on an urban grid as on a dirt switchback. The items here will help you break away from your routine while letting you hang on to your app-store comforts. Welcome to the Silicon Age of Exploration. With Espen Fadnes, Niccolo Porcella, Jokke Sommer, Miles Daisher. Food Whether you’re trekking the trails or the avenues, you’ve gotta eat. Powders and bars made from crickets pack protein, iron, vitamin B12—and less sugar than most granola. You won’t even know you’re eating bugs. Chapul Protein Powder, $39; Power Nothing says “rookie explorer” like running out of juice. This unit, with built-in Apple Lightning and micro-USB cables, lets you and two companions charge your devices at the same time. Burner phone It never hurts to have two. If your phone is lost, stolen, or broken, a prepaid flip phone will give you a secure backup—and it doesn’t even need a wireless plan. Throw one in your bag for that Jason Bourne vibe. Communication Don’t lose your friends to a cellular dead zone. The candy-bar-size goTenna turns phones into walkie-talkies, letting connected smartphones talk and text, via VHF radio waves, within a 4-mile radius. Plus, it keeps your GPS online even without a signal. First aid The price of exploring is blisters. With waterproof tape, you can protect your feet in any condition. Don’t forget to sanitize your hands before and after treating your sores.; Water Does the water in your city park or campsite fountain taste like metal? Improve your H2O by drinking it from a bottle with a built-in filter. But this bottle won’t stop all microbes, so boil water from a questionable source before filtering it. Navigation Fiddling with your phone while biking is dangerous. Get hands-free directions by attaching this turn-by-turn navigation device to your handlebars. Download the app, pick a route, pocket your phone, and follow the light-up turn signals. Rain protection Whether you’re stuck in a woodsy downpour or faced with a dew-slick park bench, you’ll want reliable, stay-dry gear. And nothing beats the versatility, protection, and low price of a rain poncho. This article was originally published in the of Popular Science, under the title “The Modern Explorer’s Survival Kit.”. Written by explorer & author Mikael Strandberg Exploration has never been more popular than today. It is alive and well. The simplistic claim that apart from the deepest oceans and outer space, there is nowhere left to explore, is wrong. The world isn't fully explored and never will be. Neither was it discovered by early explorers like Livingstone and Ibn Battuta. They traveled on existing routes and areas known by those who lived there. But they brought back information and news, may it be scientific or not, which inspired others on the path of discovery. This still defines what an explorer is today. An explorer is somebody who often makes dangerous, difficult and unique journeys for the main purpose of bringing back news from faraway lands. It is habitually including personal challenges, as much as it might be delusional, but it is almost always driven by curiosity and a great willpower of making a difference. These facts withstanding there are more people than ever who want to become explorers today. I get hundreds of emails every year from both young and old people who beg me to explain how to become a modern day explorer. I tell them the truth. You need to have what it takes. I point out that this isn't a vocation for everybody. Actually, I believe it is just for a few. But if you believe, I say to them, that you have what it takes, these nine tips will help you on your quest. You have to believe that you can make a difference and do what most people will tell you is delusional, crazy, impossible and just plain stupid. On the contrary, you know if people start accusing you of this when you tell them about your plans, you are on the right track. You need a vision, an idea that differs from most others. Few people are born with a vision. You create your own visions and ideas through intense, careful and thorough research by reading, studying and talking to people. You also need an ability to explain and sell your vision to others. An extreme passion for your idea helps! But people have to understand it! Presenting your project to possible sponsors, media partners and others in the right way is extremely important. You don't have to be a perfect human being. Be who you are and throw all those self-help books away. It is better to be an original than a copy. Most explorers are more or less slightly insane. But they are never boring. Being positive helps, but it isn't a prerequisite for attaining your vision.

The FBI had tasked Eric O’Neill to investigate Robert Hanssen, a 25-year FBI veteran and suspected spy for the Russians, but he’d have to do it face to face as Hanssen’s office assistant. O’Neill’s courageous work helped bring Hanssen down and end the greatest security breach in U.S. Robert Hanssen’s life apparently had more airtight compartments than a Tupperware party. An FBI agent and computer systems expert for decades, he was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He was a devout Catholic and a member of the international church group, Opus Dei. He’d attend Mass every day at 6:30. And yet in 1979, only three years after joining the FBI, he approached the Soviet GRU (Main Intelligence Agency) to offer his spying services on the U.S. He then later was a spy for the KGB and its successor, the SVR. 1 In 2001, the FBI had their eye on Hanssen but needed a smoking gun to nail him on spying charges. Enter Eric O’Neill, an FBI undercover field operative, or “ghost.” The FBI had, in effect, created a sting by establishing a new department at FBI headquarters, appointing Hanssen as its head and giving him O’Neill as his assistant. Dec 15, 2016. Ever the master spy, Russian President Vladimir Putin, a former KGB colonel, was personally involved in the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and efforts to interfere in the American elections, U.S. And foreign intelligence officials tell ABC News. O’Neill would be surveilling Hanssen as he worked with him. He’d have to convincingly lie to a master deceiver every business day. “He barely spoke to me at first!” O’Neill says during a Fraud Magazine interview. “And he insisted I call him ‘boss’ or ‘sir.’ I tried to find common ground by talking about the Redskins, and he told me that, ‘Football is a gladiator sport. Anyone who plays it is as stupid as the people who watch it.’ It took time to gain his trust and slowly create a mentor/mentee relationship.” But O’Neill eventually did gain Hanssen’s trust. And his Palm Pilot. “When we decrypted the Palm, we discovered not only his drop date [to the Russians], but where he would make the drop to the Russians. It was the lone smoking gun that let us win the case,” O’Neill says. Hanssen was arrested on Feb. 18, 2001, at Foxstone Park, near his home in Vienna, Virginia, where he’d made his last drop. He was charged with selling U.S. Secrets to the Soviet Union and then the Russian Federation for more than $1.4 million in cash and diamonds in 22 years. A criminal affidavit at Hanssen’s arrest alleged that on more than 20 separate occasions Hanssen clandestinely left packages for the Russians at drop sites in the Washington area. He also provided more than two-dozen computer diskettes containing additional disclosures of information. Hanssen gave the Russians more than 6,000 pages of valuable documentary materials, according to the affidavit. He pleaded guilty to 15 counts of espionage and was sentenced to 15 life terms without the possibility of parole. Department of Justice has described his spying as “possibly the worst intelligence disaster in U.S. History.” A year after O’Neill had left the FBI, he was talking with his brother who said that O’Neill’s experiences with Hanssen would make a great story. O’Neill gained permission from the FBI to pitch a book deal, which ultimately fell through, he says. However, they were able to make a pitch to Hollywood filmmakers. The treatment eventually found its way to director Billy Ray who wrote a screenplay with Adam Mazer and William Rotko. The result was the 2007 movie, “Breach,” starring Ryan Phillipe as O’Neill, Chris Cooper as Hanssen and Laura Linney as “Kate Burroughs,” O’Neill’s handler. O’Neill was an onsite advisor for the film. He now runs The Georgetown Group, of Washington, D.C., an investigative and security consultancy, where he specializes in counterintelligence operations, investigations into economic espionage, cybersecurity, internal investigations, catching the trusted insider and security risk assessment consulting. He’s also the national security strategist for Carbon Black, a provider of zero-gap endpoint security protection software that helps organizations replace ineffective antivirus, lock down endpoints and critical systems, and arm incident response teams with tools to hunt down threats. O’Neill will be a keynote speaker at the, June 18-23 in Nashville. O’Neill says he’ll be addressing recent changes in fraud and cyberespionage through the eyes of sophisticated attackers. “I will use elements of the Hanssen investigation as a framework and also to tell an entertaining story,” he says. “The audience will understand why I say that there are no hackers; there are only spies.” FM: You have a degree in political science and psychology, yet the investigatory life appealed to you. Protesters yell as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, not shown, tries to speak during a press conference on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA program, in San Francisco. Pelosi said Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, that she respects young immigrants who shouted her down at an event in San Francisco, but said their call for a comprehensive immigration overhaul was premature. Instead, lawmakers must focus on protecting young immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children, Pelosi said. (Lea Suzuki/San Francisco Chronicle via AP, File). Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi smiled as she stood at a podium in San Francisco last week and described young, undocumented immigrants as “our VIPs.” But the House Democratic leader wasn’t even finished speaking when dozens of very loud young people walked in. Her smile gone, Pelosi appeared shaken. “For a long time, we’ve been fighting the fight for the Dreamers,” she tried to interject. “We are not Dreamers!” some shouted back, drowning her out and forcing the news conference to end in chaos. Young and undocumented, yes. Just don’t call them “Dreamers.”. “We will not be bargaining chips for Trump’s agenda,” said Adrian Reyna, an Oakland resident and a leader in United We Dream, the nation’s largest immigrant youth-led organization. Not everybody protected by DACA agrees with the tactics of the protesters at Pelosi’s news conference. Social media has buzzed in recent days with debate between those who thought it a necessary call to arms, and others who viewed it as disrespectful to a reliable ally. But what immigrant-rights advocates do agree on is this: They want Congress to adopt a “clean” DREAM Act law that would pave the way for citizenship for those brought illegally to the U.S. As youngsters. They don’t want that law to include language that will help deport more of the estimated 11 million people living in the United States illegally, or funding that would help build a border wall. As Reyna put it: “We want to make sure our community is not thrown under the bus.” ‘The imagery of the cap and gown’ President Donald Trump is phasing out DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that President Obama created by executive order in 2012. The program was meant to be a temporary measure to provide relief from deportation, with a work permit, to people brought into the country illegally before the age of 16 and who meet other criteria. Ezra Miller, star of and We Need to Talk About Kevin, publicly defined his sexuality as 'queer' in 2012. But the has recently spoken of the backlash he faced both before and after explaining that he wasn't straight. Speaking to Miller said that he was warned not to share details of his sexuality – he has had romantic relationships with both men and women, and doesn't identify as heterosexual – because it could hamper his chances of landing a leading film role. The fact that he plays a superhero, The Flash, in blockbuster, has proved otherwise – and made him the first queer actor to play such a character. 'I was told by a lot of people I’d made a mistake,' Miller told Shortlist. 'Folks in the industry, folks outside the industry. People I’ve never spoken to. They said there’s a reason so many gay, queer, gender-fluid people in Hollywood conceal their sexual identity, or their gender identity in their public image. I was told I had done a ‘silly’ thing in thwarting my own potential to be a leading man.' He added: 'I was given a lot of stern talking-tos.'
